Introduction

I write…A LOT.

As an attorney, I’m constantly writing, taking notes, making corrections to documents and signing pleadings. This means that the instrument I use to do those things is important for me. Where that instrument is made is equally important for me. I’m a big fan of pens from a small company from Arizona, called Karas Kustoms.

The Company

Karas Kustoms is a machining company in Mesa, Arizona and they make, among other things, pens. Everything they make is designed and built in America. Go to their website here and watch their videos from their YouTube channel and it’ll give you a good sense of what they’re about.

This Pen

this particular pen is one I bought on sale from the company’s website for $35! That’s roughly the same price as 3 boxes of pilot G2 disposable pens, and this is something that will be around when your grandkid’s grandkids need to write something down.

This pen is called the Tumbled Aluminum Galaxie XL. It’s a pen machined out of solid aluminum and then tumbled to give it the incredible finish you see in the pictures. The cap is vented in some way, so there’s no suction or pressurization during capping and uncapping it.

The cap is really interesting. The top of the cap is a machined sprocket looking thing with concentric circles machined into the end. The clip is a different finish than the cap and the main body of the pen, which is a nice visual break from the tumbled finish. I especially like the machined screws holding the clip to the cap.

When you take the cap off, there’s a satisfying clunk that is very nice, and let’s you know that the cap isn’t going to come off on its own.

The rest of the pen’s body is surprisingly smooth. The finish makes it look like the pen would feel like holding a handful of gravel, but it’s much more like a riverbed stone. There’s definitely a texture to it, but it’s very smooth despite that.

Overall, I think this pen is a perfect blend of rugged machined metal and subtle refinement that allows it to look great from the machine shop to the boardroom. It looks special without being pretentious.

Now let’s move on to how this pen writes. It takes pilot G2 refills. This means that if you like the way a G2 writes, you’ll like how this pen writes. The other thing I like about this is that you’ll never have a problem finding refills for this pen, no matter where you are.

Lastly, I want to mention once again that this pen is designed and made in America. Karas Kustoms is a small American business and you can proud to support them with your hard earned dollars.

Conclusion

I love this pen and I especially love this pen at this price. Karas Kustoms regularly mark their pens down for holidays and Black Friday. I would certainly recommend you buy one of their pens, but I’d recommend you wait until one of their sales if you don’t need a pen immediately. That way, you can get a wonderful American Made pen at a wonderful price.
